Working from home safely and securely
Simple habits that keep company data safe outside the office
Working from home or on the move is normal now, but it takes a few good habits to keep company data safe.
Your home network
- Change the router's default Wi-Fi password if you never have. Use a long passphrase.
- Keep the router's firmware up to date. Many routers do this automatically, and it's worth checking.
- For long video calls or big uploads, a network cable beats Wi-Fi. See Which Wi-Fi band should I use?
Public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, trains)
- Your phone's personal hotspot is safer than free public Wi-Fi.
- If you must use public Wi-Fi, connect to the company VPN first, if you have one.
- Don't ignore certificate or security warnings in your browser.
Your workspace
- Lock your screen whenever you step away: Windows + L or Ctrl + Cmd + Q on a Mac.
- Take calls about confidential matters where you can't be overheard.
- Don't leave laptops visible in a parked car.
- Use a privacy screen filter if you often work in public places.
Keep work and personal separate
- Don't let family members use your work laptop.
- Save work files to OneDrive, SharePoint or Google Drive, not to personal devices, USB sticks or personal cloud accounts.
- Don't forward work email to a personal address.
