How to use Claude in Chrome with Google Sheets
Install the Claude browser extension and get help with formulas, cleanup and analysis in Sheets
Claude in Chrome is a browser extension from Anthropic. It opens Claude in a side panel next to the page you're on, and it can read the page and take actions such as clicking and typing. In Google Sheets, that means it can explain formulas, tidy data and build summaries for you.
Before you start
- A Claude account on a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan. Ask IT which account to use.
- Google Chrome on Windows or Mac. Other browsers, including Edge and Brave, and mobile aren't supported.
Step 1: Install the extension
- In Chrome, open the Claude extension in the Chrome Web Store. Check the publisher is Anthropic.
- Click Add to Chrome and approve the permissions.
- Sign in with your Claude account.
- Pin it so it's easy to find: click the puzzle piece 🧩 in the toolbar, then the pin 📌 next to Claude.
Step 2: Open it in Google Sheets
- Open your spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
- Click the Claude icon in the toolbar. The side panel opens on the right.
- Ask for what you need in plain English.
Things to try
- "Explain what the formula in D12 does."
- "Why is column F showing #REF! errors? Fix them."
- "Remove duplicate rows in this tab, based on the email column."
- "Add a new tab summarising total sales by month, with a chart."
- "Write a formula in column G that flags any order over £1,000."
Tips for better results: be specific about the tab, columns and cells you mean. Work on one tab at a time. For big changes, start on a copy (File → Make a copy).
Staying safe
Claude in Chrome can act inside your browser as you, so use it with care.
- Watch what it does and stop it if it goes off track. Claude pauses to ask before sensitive actions. Read those prompts carefully before you approve.
- Only use it on sheets and sites you trust. Content on web pages, or in files from outside the company, can contain hidden instructions that try to manipulate AI tools.
- Check its changes before you share the sheet or rely on the numbers. You can always roll back with File → Version history.
- Don't ask it to enter passwords, make payments or handle sensitive personal data.
Troubleshooting
- Can't install it? Your organisation may control which extensions are allowed. Raise a ticket.
- Claude says it can't access the page? Check the extension's site permissions, and whether your organisation has restricted which sites Claude can use.
- Using Excel instead? See How to install Claude for Excel.
